Minecraft Movie Draws Mobs

Minecraft, a game that started as a small indie game created in 2009 by Notch over a random weekend in his home of Sweden, that turned into the highest selling game in history. With over 300 million copies and $3.5 billion dollars in just game sales alone, it is no surprise that minecraft has been one of the world's biggest cultural phenomenons for the last decade with millions of toys and countless content creators to massive events with hundreds of thousands watching the impact of minecraft cannot be understated. However, in June of 2016, Minecraft announced it wanted to take a crack at the big screen, announcing their plans for a Hollywood movie but this movie was pushed back multiple times until finally, releasing on April 4th, 2025 and it was not what anyone was expecting.

In terms of the actual movie, “A Minecraft Movie” is not much to behold. At its surface it is a horrendously paced film with subpar writing and a very predictable story that in honesty does not hold true to traditions and concepts from minecraft all the time. It is yet another studio cash grab with celebrity actors such as Jack Black and Jason Mamoa which succeeded in its mission grossing $816 million with a budget of $150 million. But on the other hand, “A Minecraft Movie” is incredibly charming with well done comedic performances from the entire cast that ends up making minecraft fans reminiscent of their old memories of funtimes with their old pals. No matter how cheesy or not true to minecraft it is, viewers won't leave the film thinking they had spent their time for nothing. It is the definition of “so bad it’s actually good” and results in a hilariously fun hour and forty minutes especially if you go with your friends.

But, this is not what the main focus of this article is. While yes it is important to go over to quality of the movie, “A Minecraft Movie” has transcended the realm of traditional cinema and instead has turned into an entire social phenomenon just like how minecraft did back in 2009 however this time it’s maybe not as positive. With the direction the studio decided to take “A Minecraft Movie” it was built to be a comedic borderline silly blockbuster in nature but with its cast of people such as Jack Black it became the perfect formula to blow up on social media. As soon as the first trailer had dropped and people saw Jack Black as Steve dropping catch phrases and one liners every chance they got people were hooked. The internet ate this up and memed the movie to hell and back to the point that people wanted to see just how bad yet funny the movie was going to be, and when the film eventually released thay daje excitement did not go away at all. In a way that excitement may be doubled or tripled from before. It became a trend for entirely packed out theaters of anyone from ages 5-50 to being going into theaters to shout and cheer at every one liner of funny moment that showed up in the trailers. This eventually got insanely out of hand to the point where moviegoers started to throw popcorn and drinks all over the theater causing movie workers to speak out on how horrible this trend was making their lives. Some of these screenings got so out of hand the police were called, arresting multiple viewers.

Whether you see the trends that have come out of the Minecraft movie to be a joy to watch or a pain to see it is impossible to deny the social impact that Minecraft has had to this very day. The way a small Swedish indie game from 2009 continues to grow and bring millions of people together year after year just continues to amaze everyone a part of it.
